SM- The Angel Dragon's Cleric

This was a quick doodle of Verloren Gnade and his Sepherax dragon, Lietzern, that I used for coloring practice in Easy Paint Tool SAI at an Art Day held by my school's National Art Honors Society, of which I am a member. I know it isn't near as good as some of my recent digital pictures, but its rather hard working on a piece with people constantly hovering over my shoulder and asking questions and touching my tablet. >.>;

The original doodle was very small; only about two and a quarter inches long and an inch tall. It was doodled in the margin of a paper, hence the roughness and lacking anatomy and accuracy of the lineart. Sorry, but I was just bored and doodled this, it was never meant to turn into a serious picture. |D

I really like how the fur on Lietzern's arms came out. Fur is so much fun to do digitally. I also like the scale-feathers, although I know I could have done better on them. Overall I like the picture, but I see I could have done much better.

Now, Lietzern is a very interesting dragon. He has no eyes and therefore no traditional sense of sight. He can, however, 'see' using echolocation and other senses not fully understood by Serrin Clerics; Sepherax dragons are extremely rare, and therefore poorly understood and very understudied. Due to him being a Soul-Partner, he can take a ghost-esque form and appear in spirit with his partner, Verloren Gnade, even if they are separated by hundreds of miles. This specter-like form can reside within Verloren's body as a separate entity, communicating via telepathy.

Lietzern adopts a quadrupedal stance when on the ground, although he can also stand bipedally like a human when guarding or searching for something. He cannot walk like this, however, because of how his body is designed. Lietzern possesses two pairs of wings; the large main pair and a set of smaller wings set further down the spine. The main wings are folded like a bat's wings while on the ground, and are used as a means of locomotion, with the large joint-claw acting as a barrier between the fragile joint and the rough terrain. The wings themselves consist of a silky membrane, again like those of a bat, but this membrane is covered in lightweight feather-like scales used to produce additional lift. When stretched taunt, the membrane can be visible through the scaly feathers.

Lietzern is highly intelligent and very gentle, and is entirely sentient. Due to lacking hands, Lietzern explores his environment using his snout and mouth, in particular his lobbed tongue, which is similar to that of a young whale's tongue or the trunk of an elephant. He uses it to pick up and manipulate small objects, and the four fangs inside of it can be used to open and preform more intricate tasks, such as opening a door or finding and opening the lid of a jar. He finds that his dextrous tongue is particularly helpful in nitpicking at Verloren's clothes. Lietzern is also covered in lightweight, hollow natural armor, used to fend off attacks on his most vulnerable areas. No one is entirely sure what Lietzern or his kind consumes to survive. It's rumored they are dependent on their soul-partner for sustenance, but just what form it takes is unknown; blood, life energy, a form of absorption, no one is entirely sure and Verloren refuses to speak of the matter.

Verloren Gnade is around eighteen years of age here, and is a fully realized Cleric of Serrin; Serrin is the deity of his people. By being a soul-partner with a Sepherax, Verloren was immediately selected to become a cleric- a protector of his people and their beliefs and traditions from those that wish to do harm. He is the first new addition to the Clerics that wasn't born into the roll in over four hundred years. He has golden face-paint and violet-dyed hair, all indicative of his status as Cleric. He usually wears lavish robes, jewelry and adornments, but in this picture he is wearing a simple outfit he would usually wear when outside the palace.

More on Lietzern and Verloren and the Soul Messenger storyline will be brought to light later. I'll try to get a story sample out soon if you want. These guys need more art in my gallery.
